St Thomas Church Complex

The St Thomas Church complex and the adjacent village green are proclaimed provincial heritage sites.  As part of Stanford Conservation’s mandate to protect and conserve its historical architecture, the organisation has been assisting the Anglican congregation in restoring the church buildings.

In 2012, Stanford Conservation raised just under R115 000 to patch the church’s existing thatch roof.  The interior was also spruced up with new lights, walls were painted, and the floor was sanded.  Wooden wall panelling was installed to allow the sandstone to breathe.  Some of the exterior sandstone was also repaired.

In 2022, the congregation again approached Stanford Conservation to assist as the roofs of both the church and the church school (Oulap Hall) needed replacement and the exterior sandstone had become severely compromised.  On closer inspection much more restoration was required.

It was agreed with the church community that, in addition to the rethatching and fireproofing of both roofs, the Oulap hall should be restored in such a way that it could become a future multi-purpose venue.  This required the complete rewiring of the building, the introduction of a small kitchenette and refurbishment of the interior.

The restoration and upgrade started in February 2023 and will be completed December 2024 at a cost of about R700 000.  All funds for the project were raised by Stanford Conservation.  In addition, about R80 000’s worth of professional time was provided as pro bono services.

Utilising the hall as a multi-purpose venue will require further upgrades.  These include a new heritage approved ablution facility, disability access, a wall of remembrance, and a structured church yard layout and boundary wall.

Further fundraising will be required, and this will receive attention in 2025.  Please scan the QR code should you wish to contribute to this community project.
